"Duke"
(GI Joe: A Real American Hero)

Leader of the special mission force codenamed "GI Joe", Duke heroically leads his teammates into battle to defeat the evil terrorist organization Cobra, and stop them from taking over the world.

This is Duke, the leader of the GI Joe team. Well, the "traditional" leader of GI Joe anyways. Hawk was the "man upstairs", but Duke was the field leader of the team. If you grew up with the cartoons instead of the comics like I did, Hawk didn't exist to you until 1986. But if you were more of a comic follower, Hawk was the field leader before Duke was invented, so this just gets confusing somewhat, lol.

Despite being a stylistic re-imagining, my goal was to keep some basic aesthetics from what he looked like in the original Sunbow cartoons, so that it still was "Duke" (if you know what I mean) so that focus was put on his head mostly, which is reminiscent of what it looked like, complete with cleft chin and the combed back hair instead of the buzzcut sorta thing he traditionally seems to have now in recent incarnations.

(NOTE: this is a work of fiction, this is not for a REAL animated series! I don't work in the animation industry in any way.)

**EDIT: I shortened his neck so it doesn't look as tall anymore**

Most awesome Duke. I never liked the character much myself, mainly because it was the "new girl every other episode" thing. The ones that made me think "clones" was the Falcon and Flint thing. Falcon wore the scarf which said "LOok I'm not Flint!".

lol my brother and I LOVED the Falcon toy for some reason (didn't care about him in the movie though). I have no idea why, and I still do, but I think it may have been because I didn't have a Flint toy and he was close enough, but I could be wrong XD

Flint was way better! :P

Yeah, Falcon had the same issues with me that Duke had, bu to a greater degree. He was obnoxious and I wanted to give him a good poke in the eye. Actually.. I wouldn't have minded giving Flint a good smack too, but at least Flint was really good at his job and smart. And he had a beret, which you know makes ALL the difference. Cause you could call him "beret-boy" to cheese him off.

lol yeah Flint was a jackass, but he was actually a pretty fun character. There were so many good characters, and a lot of 86'ers that are often ignored like Lifeline and Low-Light and Wet Suit etc etc. The 85'ers were really awesome, Flint was there and so was Dusty and Shipwreck and Alpine and Bazooka and Airtight, those were my fave 2 years of the line character-wise.

Flint had a lot of depth to him. Dusty and Shipwreck and Airtight were all really nice characters. GOtta love Dusty. Alpine and Bazooka just always cracked me up as a pair.
Torpedo was a fun character that really swung all over as to how he was supposed to be portreyed. Lifeline rocks as a characters, and I wish they'd kept to his pacifist nature, it really made the character unique.

Oh yeah, Alpine and Bazooka were hilarious together XD It really goes to show how strong of a line Joe was in 85-86, which was when it was at its peak sales wise (I believe).

This is a classic, man. Considering that his real name in the series is known as Conrad Hauser. But looking at it closely, the style reminds me of the design from Trasformers Animated. ^^ :)

Duke is my favorite character, and they shot a snake-spear through him.
And then there's what they did to Cobra Commander, too.

Yeah same here I was like "who's this guy?" I don't think I really but 2 and 2 together even afterwards when the Hawk toy came out and he showed up in the cartoon. Probably because he looked way different with the bomber jacket and had brown hair instead of blonde.

That was the other problem, Duke and Hawk practically looked the same in the comics too!

Yeah, so there was still a layer of "What the...?" Since Hawk from the cartoon looked like an older badass leader, and in the comics he was Duke's higher ranking clone. (Or would that make Duke the lesser clone of Hawk?)

I think to many hardcore GI Joe fans, Duke is a lesser clone of Hawk. For them, the comics are their story canon and the cartoons... not so much.

But I honestly preferred the Hawk from the cartoon and how he was portrayed and looked. I got an AP of him in the works too :P

Thats how I am with both GI Joe and Transformers, for me the cartoons were what I grew up with, and the cartoons take overall priority in my memories of what they were to me. The comics are sort of an "addition", yknow? I still love em to death mind you, but the cartoons are sort of like the "true" take in a way or something. This sounds kinda stupid reading it back as I'm typing, like I'm thinking too deep into this, lol :P

I have a pretty good memory for Duke.

My dad worked the Graveyard shift at a cup company as me and my brothers were growing up.

So one night/morning that he got off, I guess he had gone to a toys r us or somewhere before work. He wakes me, Josh and Jeremy up and has gifts for us.

For Josh, he has a Robocop figure. For Jeremy, he has a DareDevil figure, and for me, he has Duke. That was a damned cool way to wake up, don't ya think? I had to be maybe 4 or 5 at the time. I'm pretty amazed that I remember that actually.

All that aside, nicely done Kris!

Definitely an awesome way to wake up!

I still remember my earliest memory I was like 3 years old back in 1984 and my Dad bought me the Trailbreaker Transformer toy. And the only reason he did was because it looked like the old camper truck he use to love that he traded in for a family car once he had kids :P So I can thank him for getting me into Transformers right at the beginning of it all at 3 years old

That's awesome!

Yeah, we had a similar kind of story in that our dad had a station wagon that looked like the Ghostbusters one. We thought about decking it out one year for Haloween, but I think we decided not to because i'm pretty sure mom would not have been too happy about that...... but we had the Ghostbuster Car!
